Because I’m a crazy party animal like no other, my Saturday night consisted of making dinner to the sounds of The Guess Who’s “Canned Wheat,” the 1969 album that brought us classics like “Undun,” “Laughing,” and the original, “harder” take on “No Time.”

Given that I’ve been in a Stephen Stills mood all day (see previous post), one of the songs on this album has always struck me as very Buffalo Springfield-y: “Minstrel Boy.”
The lyrics are fairly simple, but there’s a feel to this one musically like it could have been a serviceable outtake from the Springfield’s “Last Time Around” LP.
If anything, this song is a reminder that Randy Bachman was good for far more than simple, riffy blue-collar meat-and-potatoes rockers.
